MINNEAPOLIS — Three Augsburg College wrestlers who competed in this past weekend’s NCAA Division III National Championships earned Scholar All-America honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced during the championships.
Two-time heavyweight national champion Chad Johnson (JR, Ferryville, Wis./DeSoto HS), two-time 174-pound national tournament qualifier Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) and 141-pound national qualifier Tom Kuehn (SO, Fargo, N.D./West Fargo HS) all earned Scholar All-America honors. It’s the second straight year that Johnson has earned the honor, and the first award for Kohler and Kuehn.
Johnson is an elementary education major with a 3.4500 grade-point average, while Kohler is an exercise science major with a 3.0556 GPA and Kuehn is a biology major with a 3.8333 GPA.
A three-time All-American, Johnson claimed his second straight national championship at heavyweight this season, becoming the 10th Augsburg wrestler (and second heavyweight) to ever claim multiple national championships, along with becoming the 40th Auggie wrestler to earn three or more All-American honors. He finished seventh nationally at heavyweight in 2011, before claiming national titles in both 2012 and 2013.
Johnson finished his junior season at 37-1, with 24 bonus-point victories (15 pins, one technical fall, eight major decisions). Over the last two national title seasons, Johnson has been unbeaten against Division III competition, with a 73-2 record in that span. Johnson is now 105-13 in his career, with 62 bonus-point victories (35 pins, two technical falls, 25 major decisions), and will carry a 29-match winning streak into his senior campaign.
Kohler qualified for the national tournament for the second straight year by finishing third at the NCAA Division III West Regional, winning eight of his final 10 matches of the season entering the national tournament. This season, he finished 27-14 overall with five pins, two technical falls and three major decisions.
Last year, Kohler finished 30-19 in his first national tournament season. In his Auggie career, Kohler finished 88-64, with 19 pins, five technical falls and seven major decisions.
Kuehn qualified for the national tournament at 141 pounds this season, after finishing third at the NCAA Division III West Regional. On the season, Kuehn finished 24-18 with two pins, three technical falls and six major decisions.

In his two seasons at Augsburg, Kuehn is now 44-27, with seven pins, six technical falls and eight major decisions.
Over the past 28 seasons, Augsburg has produced 120 NWCA Scholar All-Americans. Augsburg has had 97 student-athletes honored since 1997, including 17 under current head coach Mark Matzek — himself a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American during his Augsburg career (2001-05).
