TULSA, Okla. – North Dakota State 125-pounder Brent Fleetwood and 165 Andrew Fogarty were runner-up in their respective weight classes at the Big 12 Conference Championships on Sunday, March 10, in the BOK Center. NDSU 174 Lorenzo De La Riva claimed third place, while 157 Luke Weber was sixth.
Fleetwood, Fogarty and De La Riva all earned automatic invites to the NCAA Championships scheduled for March 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. At-large bids will be announced Tuesday, March 12, and seeding and brackets on Wednesday, March 13, on NCAA.com.
The Bison, with 53.5 points finished eighth in the team standings. Oklahoma State had 158 points and won its seventh straight championship with six individual champions.
Fogarty, a redshirt junior from Jordan, Minn., jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns. He built his biggest lead at 5-1 on a second period escape, but Romero countered with a takedown with 25-seconds left.
After a third period escape, Romero kept the pressure and took a 6-5 lead on a takedown with 37-seconds left. Fogarty tied the match 6-6 on an escape and was positioning for a takedown as time ran out. Romero collected the winning takedown 13-seconds into the extra session.
Fogarty (20-4) was runner-up for the second straight season. He will be making his third straight NCAA appearance.
Fleetwood, a redshirt senior from Syrmna, Del., dropped a 2-0 decision to top-seeded Nick Piccininni of Oklahoma State in Sunday’s first final. Piccininni gained an escape 13-seconds into the second period and then held the top position for the entire third, claiming another point for riding time.
It’s the top conference finish for Fleetwood (24-4), who placed third at the 2016 Mid-American Conference tournament. He will be making his third NCAA tournament appearance.
De La Riva, a redshirt junior from Folsom, Calif., placed third with a convincing 10-5 decision over Utah Valley’s Kimball Bastian. De La Riva led 1-0 heading into what turned out to be a topsy-turvy third period. He then exploded for a pair of takedowns and a 4-point nearfall to pull away. Bastian was ranked No. 11 nationally, giving him a pair of top 25 wins this weekend.
De La Riva (25-9) advanced to the third place bout and clinched the NCAA AQ with a 4-3 decision over Wyoming’s Hayden Hastings. He lost to Hastings twice during the regular season. His escape with 1:09 left in the third was the deciding point. Most of the scoring took place in the first period. De La Riva scored the first takedown at 2:11, then a Hastings reversal and De La Riva escape at 1:16.

Weber, a redshirt sophomore from Forsyth, Mont., dropped an exhausting 7-5 tiebreaker-1 decision to Fresno State’s Jacob Wright in the fifth place match. Weber and Wright were tied 4-4 at the end of regulation and didn’t score until the fourth extra time session. Weber had an escape to start the first 30-seconds, but Wright recorded a takedown before the end
Weber (10-6) led Alex Mossing 1-0 headed into the third period. Mossing went to work with an escape, two takedowns and 4-point nearfall. Weber sustained a knee injury with 55-seconds left in the third, but fought through it to finish.
