Pakistan and India need help climbing down, or risk another war over Kashmir

While the eyes of the world have been on Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un’s Hanoi talks to denuclearise North Korea, a potentially more dangerous nuclear threat has erupted 2,000 miles away.

As Mr Trump and his counterpart declare their bonhomie, India and Pakistan say they have been trading air strikes and engaging in aerial dogfights.

One of the world’s oldest frozen conflicts, the simmering dispute over Kashmir, has once again roared into life and is all the more menacing because the participants are nuclear armed.

This week’s flare-up has seen the neighbours reach their most serious stand-off for two decades in an escalation that may become a serious test of diplomacy for Mr Trump.
