#2 St. Cloud State Wrestling on the road to Moorhead

The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team will continue its 2017-18 season on Nov. 18 with a trip to the Finn Grinaker Open. The tournament will be hosted by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. and the action is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

St. Cloud State wrestling fans can follow all the results on the Trackwrestling website this weekend.

SCSU Wrestling Huskies Headlines

  • The Huskies opened the 2017-18 season with a stop at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Nov. 11 in Mitchell, S.D. The Huskies won six weight bracket titles at the Dakota Wesleyan Open. First place finishes went to Brett Velasquez (125), Jarred Oftedahl (141), Larry Bomstad (157), Austin Rake (184), Nolan Ryan (197) and Lawrence Phillips (285).
  • SCSU was ranked #2 in this year’s NCAA DII preseason poll. SCSU was ranked #1 in this year’s NSIC preseason poll.
  • Did you know that SCSU junior Ryan Rodorigo (141) is a veteran? He served for four years in the Coast Guard before joining the wrestling team at SCSU.
  • SCSU won the top three spots in the 141-pound weight bracket at the Dakota Wesleyan Open with Jarred Oftedahl placing first, Ryan Rodorigo placing second and Travis Swanson placing third.
  • In the 2017-18 Division II preseason polls, SCSU’s Larry Bomstad was ranked #1 in the nation at 157-pounds and James Pleski was ranked #1 at 149-pounds. Junior Brett Velasquez was ranked #2 at 125-pounds and Jarred Oftedahl was ranked #7 at 197-pounds. At 184-pounds, SCSU’s Tyree Overton was ranked #12 and Vince Dietz was ranked #9.
  • Of note, SCSU’s Garrett Vos placed second in the 133-pound bracket at the DWU Open and Jake Barzowski placed second at 149. At 165-pounds, Devin FitzPatrick placed third at the DWU Open and Alex Anaya placed third in the 174-pound bracket.

Youth/Middle School/Prep Night scheduled for Nov. 30 at SCSU
All students in grades K-12 will be admitted to the St. Cloud State wrestling match on Nov. 30 against Southwest Minnesota State for just $1. This match begins the beginning of the NSIC season for the Huskies and the action will begin at 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall. Tickets for this match may be purchased at the gate on the night of the match. SCSU is the six-time defending NSIC team champion with league titles won in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.
