#4 St. Cloud State wrestling scores 47-0 victory over Northern State

The #4 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (10-2, 1-0 NSIC) opened defense of its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship with a convincing 47-0 victory over Northern State University on Friday, Jan. 23 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Huskies dominated the score sheet from start to finish as they took advantage of three forfeit victories and two pins to cruise to the victory over NSIC rival NSU. The Huskies will complete the weekend at home against Minnesota State, Mankato with a 2 p.m. dual match against the Mavericks on Saturday, Jan. 24. The match has been designated as SCSU Alumni Day and it will feature the return of several former SCSU wrestlers for the festivities, which will include an introduction of the SCSU alumni during the match.

In action on Jan. 23, the Huskies opened the night with a 12-6 decision by Josh Berg at 165-pounds against NSU’s Blake Perryman. The Huskies’ Garrett Miller earned a forfeit win at 174 pounds while Dylon Braun posted a 2:30 pin against David Murphy of NSU at 184-pounds.

At 197-pounds, SCSU’s VJ Giulio gained a 4-2 victory over NSU’s Joe Gomez and Caleb White scored a 2:12 pin at 285-pounds over NSU’s Dustin Caspers.

The Huskies gained forfeit victories at 125-pounds and 133-pounds before Brett Stolarzyk scored a 7-2 win at 141-pounds against Tyler Frost of NSU. At 149-pounds, SCSU’s Taner Trembley rolled to a 15-4 major decision over Grant Steen of NSU. The night was capped by a 14-3 major decision win by Travis Holt over NSU’s Sean Havolic at 157-pounds.

The victory improves SCSU’s dual record to 10-2, which includes a 1-0 record in NSIC action this winter.

Tickets for tomorrow’s match against Minnesota State, Mankato can be purchased at the gate on Jan. 24.
