SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE
The biggest pro wrestling news of the weekend is the departure of Eric Young and Bobby Roode from TNA. There is the irony that the two started together and left together, and in real life, they’ve been good friends dating back before TNA when both were starting out as indie wrestlers in Ontario. There is nothing confirmed, but within the industry, the belief is Roode is WWE-bound.
Hulk Hogan-Gawker: E! speculates on how much of the $115 million that Hulk Hogan will actually get and The New York Times on the whole affair
At the Evolve show last night, William Regal announced that there would be qualifying matches for the Global cruiserweight tournament that will take place on Evolve shows. That’s throwing them a pretty big bone. The matches and dates haven’t been announced, and whether those matches will be on WWNLive or WWE Network hasn’t been announced either.
Kyle Snyder beat Nick Gwiazdowski to win the NCAA heavyweight championship in what was pushed, and rightly, so, as the biggest heavyweight championship match in recent memory. There have been a few which, due to the notoriety after the face (Brock Lesnar vs. Stephen Neal in 1999, Kurt Angle vs. Sylvester Terkay in 1992) look big but at the time it was never someone on an 88 match winning streak against the defending world champion, let alone a sold out Madison Square Garden as the venue. Snyder was very lucky regulation time expired before Gwiazdowski escaped to get a 5-5 tie, and then scored a takedown in overtime to win. Both wrestlers will be headed to the Olympic trials in three weeks, with Snyder in the 215.6 pound division and Gwiazdowski at 286.
Today’s New Japan show from Amagasaki which featured Tomohiro Ishii retaining the ROH TV title over Evil will be put up on New Japan World on a tape delay. It wasn’t up as of this writing but should be up in the next 24 hours.
As far as Google searches for the weekend, Gawker was No. 1 on Friday with 500,000, which would include the interest in Hulk Hogan winning his case. Last night Frank Mir was No. 7 with 100,000. A lot of people are talking that he should retire. Before the fight, Mir said he felt that he could go another five to ten years.
WWE
The matches not official yet for WrestleMania are expected to have the angles finalized tomorrow night, which would be the IC title match and the second women’s match involving Brie Bella and Lana and their multiple partners.
While he still has matches left in NXT (the match with Shinsuke Nakamura on 4/1 is scheduled as his last one), this was Sami Zayn’s last weekend doing NXT tours.
Sheamus will be a guest on Conan O’Brien on Thursday night on TBS at 11 p.m., to likely promote WrestleMania. (thanks to Jon Southerland)
