According to Dave Meltzer in a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE commentators were given a list of rules for The Greatest Royal Rumble and Jerry Lawler even went on record to state that the company actually gave them a booklet on what they could and couldn’t say. The observer also indicated that one of the topics that the announcers were told not to mention was the Sami Zayn situation. As previously reported, Sami Zayn was not part of the event or even the 50-Man Royal Rumble Match due to his Syrian background.
It was also mentioned on the observer that the Saudi Prince requested that the “announcer with the crown” and the “announcer with the black hat” work the event, which obviously refers to Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross. That is likely why Ross and Lawler were first advertised as being the announcers for the show before the company decided to change things up and place them on the Kickoff Show instead.
