BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced that Southwest Minnesota State University seventh-year head wrestling coach Jesse Nelson has been named 2013 NSIC Coach of the Year, while Justin Reinsma, Kyle Begin and Jacob Begin have been named All-NSIC first team. Cole Wilson was named to the All-NSIC second team.

Jesse Nelson led Southwest Minnesota State to a 6-2 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2013-14 marking the most NSIC wins in school history and first winning conference record since 2000-01. The Mustangs finished 12-5 overall to achieve their third straight season reaching double-digit dual wins. This season Nelson tutored four national qualifiers and three NSIC Wrestlers of the Week. During his seven-year tenure, Nelson has transformed a winless program in 2007 into a conference contender each of the past three years. SMSU’s 13 dual wins in 2012-13 were the most wins in school history since the 1989-90 season. In 2013-14, Nelson guided SMSU to dual wins over Augustana and Minnesota State. The win over the Vikings was the first since 1998-99, while the 31-9 victory over the Mavericks snapped a 22-dual losing skid dating back to the 1990-91 season. In seven seasons, Nelson has groomed 16 national qualifiers, including eight in the last two seasons alone and four All-NSIC wrestlers. Nelson led Justin Reinsma to All-American status twice at 133 pounds and to 113 career-wins, which ranks third all-time in school history.

Not only has Nelson improved SMSU on the mat but in the classroom as well. Under Nelson’s guidance this past season, SMSU turned in the 10th highest GPA in the NCAA Division II with a mark of 3.21. SMSU finished the 2012-13 season with a GPA of 2.97 — the 20th best in NCAA Division II. In the last three seasons, 17 Mustangs have been honored with National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic awards coupled with Ethan Hildebrandt’s and Micah Larson’s Capital One Academic All-District selections in 2012-13.

It marks the first time Nelson has been honored with the award. Nelson is the fourth SMSU head coach in the last two calendar years to be selected as NSIC Coach of the Year – Terry Culhane (2013, Volleyball), Brad Bigler (2012-13, Men’s Basketball), and TJ Buchholz (2013, Women’s Soccer).

Justin Reinsma, a native of Slayton, Minn., finished the season 32-14 at 133 pounds. His 32 wins in his senior season marked a career-high and ranks tied for eighth most in school history. Reinsma finished his storied career 113-50. His 113 wins ranks third most in school history. Reinsma qualified for his third NCAA Division II national tournament with a fourth-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Central Super Regional tournament. This marks Reinsma’s first All-NSIC first team selection. Reinsma, a two-time All-American, was named All-NSIC second team in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Reinsma earned NSIC Wrestler of the Week for the first time in his career on Feb. 3, for his performance versus Minnesota State.

Kyle Begin, a native of Anoka, Minn., finished the season 28-9 at 165 pounds and was the runner-up at the 2014 NCAA Central Super Regional. He was the 174-pound regional champion as a true freshman. Begin, a two-time national qualifier, tied for the team lead with 12 pins and earns his second consecutive All-NSIC first team selection. Begin was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week on Feb. 10, for his performances versus No. 4 St. Cloud State and Northern State.

Jacob Begin, a native of Anoka, Minn., went 25-9 at 174 pounds and placed fourth at the 2014 NCAA Central Super Regional. Begin, who was the runner-up at 165 pounds at the NCAA Super 3 Regional tournament in 2012-13, tied for the team lead with 12 pins on his way to his second consecutive national qualifying berth. This marks the first time Begin has been named to the All-NSIC first team. Begin earned All-NSIC second team honors at 165 pounds last season.

Cole Wilson, a native of Faribault, Minn., tallied a mark of 26-12 at 285 pounds this season for the Mustangs. Wilson qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament for the first time in his career with a fourth-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Central Super Regional. Wilson was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 5, for his fourth-place finish at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open. This marks the first time Wilson has been selected All-NSIC.

Upper Iowa’s Carl Broghammer was named NSIC Wrestler of the Year, while St. Cloud State Husky Austin Goergen was tabbed as NSIC Rookie of the Year.

Southwest Minnesota State University finished the season 12-5 overall, 6-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
