MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team has a busy week ahead with a pair of competitions. The Dragons open their dual season on Thursday at the University of Jamestown and then will compete at the Cobber Open on Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
The dual at Jamestown begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in Jamestown, N.D., with the Cobber Open beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Concordia College.

Senior Matt Lewellen had an excellent day at 184 pounds for the Dragons to lead the team at the Bison Open on Nov. 9. He opened with a pin of South Dakota State’s Jake Turk in 2:36 and then edged Anthony Navarro of Northern State, 6-5. He fell to Brett Pfarr of Minnesota by technical fall, 17-0 but came back to beat Christian Harrison of Concordia, 7-5. Lewellen captured third with a 7-6 win over SDSU’s Ben Schwery.
Senior Angel Vega claimed third at 141 pounds. He pinned Joe Umlauf of North Dakota State, in 6:24. and then beat Coltan Laganiere of South Dakota State, 7-2. Vega lost in the semifinals to Christopher Dardanes of Minnesota, 21-9. He came back to pin Justin LaValle of North Dakota State, 2:48 to claim third.
Junior Michael was fifth at 174 pounds for MSUM. He beat Lance Valiquette, 6-0 and then followed with a 9-4 win over Blake Lundgren of Northern State. Joseph fell to Hayden Zillmer of NDSU, 19-5 and then lost to Concordia’s Sebastian Gardner, 10-1. Joseph came back with a 15-5 major decision win over Lundgren to claim fifth.
Senior Connor MacGregor went 2-2 at 149 pounds for MSUM. Freshman Blake Bosch (125 pounds), redshirt freshman Austin Leibel (133), sophomore Jesse Puncochar (165) and junior Connor Monk (174) all went 1-2 on the day.
