President Trump clarified his remarks about British royal Meghan Markle in a television interview set to be aired Wednesday, saying it wasn’t his intention to call her “nasty” but thought her past comments about him were nasty.

“And I said: ‘Well, I didn’t know she was nasty.’ I wasn’t referring to she’s nasty,” he told host Piers Morgan in an interview on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain,” according to part of the transcript that was released Tuesday evening.

“I said she was nasty about me. And essentially I didn’t know she was nasty about me.”

“She’s doing a good job. I hope she enjoys her life… I think she’s very nice,” Trump added.

He also said “She was nasty to me. And that’s okay for her to be nasty, it’s not good for me to be nasty to her and I wasn’t,” according to the Daily Mail.

In an earlier interview a British newspaper, a reporter read Trump a statement Markle made during the 2016 US election, in which she said she would move to Canada if he was elected and referred to him as “misogynistic” and “divisive.”

Trump responded at the time: “I didn’t know that she was nasty.”

On Sunday he tweeted that he never called her nasty and the comment was “made up.”

Trump is in England for a state visit, which will conclude on Wednesday with a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.
