New Japan Pro-Wrestling star Tama Tonga has asked to be taken out of the upcoming G1 Climax, the promotion’s annual round robin tournament to decide the best heavyweight singles wrestler in the world.

Tama, 37, one of the founding fathers of Bullet Club and the son of pro wrestling legend King Haku, would be competing in his fourth consecutive G1 Climax. In 2016 he debuted fourth in his block, in 2017 he moved up to sixth in his block, but in last year’s 2018 tournament he finished last in his block, only winning three matches.

As one half of the current reigning IWGP Tag Team Champions and ROH World Tag Team Champions, Tama noted on Twitter that his “focus is on tag team” wrestling, laying down an “open challenge to anyone who wants smoke and an ass whoopin”.

Alongside his brother, Tanga Loa (previously known as Camacho in WWE), the champion is scheduled to be a big part of the upcoming Ring of Honor and New Japan War of the Worlds tour in the United States, kicking off next week.

The Guerrillas of Destiny are scheduled to team with Hikuleo against a trio of U.S. NJPW Young Lions on 5/10 in Toronto, against The Kingdom on 5/11 in Grand Rapids, and in tag team action against Jay Lethal & Jonathan Gresham on 5/9 in Buffalo, and against The Briscoes on 5/12 at the ROH television tapings in Chicago.
