In a five part series, GFFN Chief Features Writer Eric Devin names his top five flops of the Ligue 1 2015/16 season. Next up is frontman Guido Carrillo.

The staggering fee received for Anthony Martial has certainly softened the blow of losing the promising striker for AS Monaco, or at least appeased their accountants, but those brought in to replace the Frenchman have been poor this season, the Argentine chief among them.

While Martial’s pace and imagination were never going to replicated by a player who stands 6′ 2″, Carrillo was badly exposed as an outlet ill-suited to the creative nous of the likes of Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar.

Carrillo was an effective target man, demonstrating a good aerial ability, but a return of only four league goals (two of those a brace against Troyes at that) simply doesn’t cut it for a player of his experience.

Other players (Ivan Cavaleiro, Gabriel Boschilia) likewise failed to have much of an impact, but are seen more as investments for the future, not experienced players.

This, coupled with his replacement in the starting eleven by Vagner Love after the winter window means that Carrillo unquestionably belongs on this list.
