Concerted pollution-control measures, coupled with favourable weather conditions, allowed Delhi to breathe easier — albeit slightly — in October and November this year compared with the same period in 2016 and 2017.
An analysis of October data showed an average AQI of 268.6 for 2018, a slight improvement from 284.9 in 2017 and 270.9 in 2016. However, at 334.9, the average AQI for November was a big improvement on the last two years (360.9 in 2017 and 374.06 in 2016). In November 2016, Delhi saw as many as 10 “severe” days. An AQI reading between 201 and 300 is classified as “poor” on the CPCB index; anything between 301 and 400 is “very poor”. A reading above 400 is classified as “severe” on the index that has a maximum limit of 500.
