Germany says Brexit deal might take longer than two years
Merkel party official says it is ‘a little bit naive’ to expect a deal to be wrapped up quickly.
Negotiations on a trade deal between the EU and the U.K. are unlikely to be completed within two years, a German government official said Friday.
It is “a little bit naive” to think a deal could be achieved within that time span, Stephan Mayer, the home affairs spokesman for Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, told BBC Radio 4’s Today program, according to the Guardian.
However, Meyer expressed optimism about finding a solution to the issue of British citizens living in the EU and EU nationals resident in the U.K.
“Certainly more than 1 million British citizens live in the other 27 member states, so that is a very decisive issue for the U.K. government and certainly the other way around; more than 300,000 German citizens, for instance, are living in the U.K., so I think we have the same interests,” he said.
