Commission reshuffles senior management

Changes follow retirement of Dirk Ahner.

The European Commission decided today to move around senior managers to fill a gap left by the retirement of the former director-general for regional policy.

At its meeting today in Strasbourg, the Commission agreed to move Walter Deffaa from his post as director-general for taxation and customs union to the post of head of the regional policy department. The regional policy post became vacant on 1 January on the retirement of Dirk Ahner. Deffaa, like Ahner, is a German national

Deffaa will be replaced by Heinz Zourek, currently director-general in the enterprise and industry department. Zourek, an Austrian national, will be replaced by Daniel Calleja Crespo, a Spaniard, who is currently a deputy director-general in the enterprise and industry department.

Calleja Crespo will be replaced as deputy director-general by Antti Peltomaki, a Finn who is currently a deputy director-general in the information society and media department.

The changes will take effect on 1 February
