FOXBOROUGH, MA — That sigh you just heard was the rest of the NFL realizing Tom Brady’s tweet announcing his retirement Monday fell on April Fools’ Day. No, the (arguably) greatest quarterback of all time is not hanging up his spikes, despite writing “I’m retiring” in his first-ever tweet shortly after noon. The 41-year-old Brady, who won his sixth Super Bowl this year, has repeatedly said he plans to play until 45 if he can.
Twitter confirmed the new @TomBrady account indeed belongs to the quarterback. Brady’s tweet added, “In my spare time, I’ll be tweeting #LFG.” In internet slang, that means “Looking for group” or “Let’s f—— go.” People may be unsure which phrase Brady meant; we certainly have a guess.
About an hour later, Brady tweeted again, “Was this a bad joke?” His account had 60,000 followers and counting as of about 1:30 p.m.
Brady already has a massive presence on Instagram (6 million followers) and Facebook (4 million).
