A native Houstonian has been identified as one of more than a dozen people killed in a terrorist attack in Nairobi Kenya, according to the Associated Press.
Jason Spindler, who was the co-founder and chief executive of I-Dev International, was inside the hotel and shopping compound when several armed men stormed the Dusit hotel.
According to reports, Al-Shabab, an extremist group with connections to al-Qaida, claimed responsibility for the hotel siege, the Associated Press reported.
Several news organizations, including the Washington Post and the BBC have reported that Spindler, a former investment banker, was a survivor of the 9-11 attack in New York who helped pull survivors from the rubble.
Spindler’s family will be flying back to Nairobi to retrieve his body, and plan to hold a religious service to honor his memory on Monday, Spindler’s 41st birthday.
Spindler co-founded I-DEV International in 2007. According to I-Dev International webpage, the company matches investors to emerging markets in Latin America, Africa, Asia and South Asia.
