Coronavirus Arizona: 'Promchella' May Replace High School Proms

Arizona high schoolers watched prom season drift away this year, with school closures and a statewide order to stay at home effectively ending the party before it began. But now Nick’s Menswear, an Arizona-based clothier that supplies suits for proms, is attempting to save prom season by producing “Promchella.”

Described as a “prom meets house party meets live music,” the two-day event is intended for high school juniors and seniors who were not able to attend their own prom and is scheduled for July 17 and 18. However, the Promchella website cautions that these plans are contingent on the state lifting restrictions on public events.

“When the concerns over large public gatherings end, and they will end, we know people are going to be ready to get out, see their friends and have some fun,” the website states. It adds, “If by chance this does continue into the summer months and we are forced to cancel or reschedule, all tickets purchased from Promchella will be refunded.”

In a video posted to the event’s Instagram, Arizona high school students took turns — each filming themselves from home — describing Promchella and touting its impact on students and the community.

On Monday, Josh Fink, general manager at Nick’s Menswear, told ABC 15 that the proceeds from Promchella would benefit “families in need, businesses in need.” He added that he’s in the process of forming additional partnerships with other local organizations hurt by economic conditions of the coronavirus lockdown.

VIP tickets are currently on sale for the early-bird price of $70, which includes $20 credit for food trucks, entrance to the live music acts and a “Fireworks Spectacular Show.” Currently, the venue for Promchella is listed as an “undisclosed location.”
