Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular | Thursday, 8 p.m., NBC
This year’s Macy’s extravaganza moves down river from Midtown East to the Brooklyn Bridge. The 25-minute display in honor of Independence Day has a musical theme this year: classic American Cinema and the score will feature instrumentals from American films such as John Williams’ compositions for “Star Wars,” “Superman” and “E.T.” to Max Steiner’s “Casablanca Suite” and Alfred Newman’s “20th Century Fox Fanfare.” “World of Dance” judge Derek Hough will co-host the live event with singer Ciara. They will welcome to the stage Luke Bryan, Khalid, Maren Morris and Brad Paisley.
Hough, 34, spoke to The Post after finishing up a European vacation with his girlfriend, former “Dancing With the Stars” dancer Hayley Erbert.
How did Salt Lake City celebrate the 4th of July when you were growing up? Were fireworks legal or illegal?
Salt Lake City went full-out. I have many fond memories of the fireworks, the wonderment, the barbecues and the neighborhoods. Certain fireworks were illegal because it was so dry there so we had really basic stuff, nothing special. For the actual fireworks show, we went to Sugar House Park.
Have you ever been to New York City for a 4th of July celebration? We like volume.
This will be my first time. It’s pretty amazing. I saw a picture of one and I said, “Holy crap!”

What will your duties be during the festivities?
I’m co-hosting with Ciara. I’ll be introducing the acts and doing a few performances. I just finished a 56-city tour and went on a little vacation with my girlfriend Hayley Erbert. I just got back. In the next four days, I’m going to put the routines together. It will have some rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop, samba and cha-cha. I’ll do a little bit of everything.
Will you wear earplugs during the fireworks display?
No. I’ll be head to the heavens, soaking it in. From what I’ve been told, there are going to be 70,000 shells from the bridge and from four barges near Pier 17. The fireworks come in 28 colors and have crazy names like screaming dragons, silver twisters, diamond screamers. And there’s a 1,600-foot waterfall of fireworks.
What’s your next project?
I am releasing a single, my first, on July 12. It’s called “Say It Now” and it’s on the One RPM label. I held on to it for a long time. I have a few things this fall going into the Christmas holiday season. Season 4 of “World of Dance” starts next year.
