It’s Vogue official: Elle Fanning has graduated from being known as Dakota Fanning‘s younger sister, and found her own spotlight. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t grateful for all the ways that having a big sis in the business helped her find her footing.

The 19-year-old actress paved her own path into the industry, starting acting at the age of 2 and working alongside greats like Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, as well as beside Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon in the just-released 3 Generations. Now, she’s starring in Sofia Coppola’s drama The Beguiled and posing on her first American Vogue cover in a giant rose headpiece for the magazine’s June issue. There’s no question that the star has made quite a mark of her own, but she still sometimes wonders what her life would have been like if Dakota didn’t get into acting first.

“You think, Gosh, if I didn’t have a sister who started acting, would I be acting?” Elle said in her cover story with Vogue. “It’s scary to think of not being able to do movies still.”

If you think the Fanning sisters fight over roles and get jealous of each other’s acting gigs, think again. The two are adamant that the complete opposite is true: they’re actually incredibly supportive.

“People sometimes want us to feel weird jealousy or competition,” Dakota told Vogue. “It will never happen. There’s no one I want to see succeed or soar more.”

While the sibling bond might be strong enough to overcome a professional rivalry, Elle admitted that she’s not always as sweet as she might seem. In fact, she cops to having a huge temper—and wishing more people in Hollywood knew that about her. “My mom and my sister are always like, ‘That’s not something you brag about,’” she said with a laugh. “But I tell strangers—I’m also very trusting of people—like, ‘I get so mad!’ ”

Unlike other teens her age, Elle’s a bit of an old soul at heart. While most millennials that spend most of their free time on social media, Fanning doesn’t even have a Facebook or Twitter (which she adorably calls “the Facebook and the Twitter”). She finally got Instagram, but sharing isn’t exactly second nature to her, and she admits that she feels insecurity before she send a photo out to her 1 million followers.

“Before you share, you get nervous: You can’t help but have those flashes,” she says. Turns out, she might not be so different than other people her age—or everyone else in the world.
