EU and US leaders to meet in Warsaw in July
Transatlantic talks will be held during NATO summit.
The European Union’s top officials will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama for a transatlantic summit in July in Warsaw, the EU announced Monday.
The EU-U.S. summit will take place during a gathering of leaders of NATO member countries in the Polish capital on July 8 and 9, according to a statement from the European Commission. The meeting, between Obama and European Council President Donald Tusk and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, “will provide an opportunity to underline transatlantic unity and discuss common political, economic and international security challenges,” the statement said.
The July meeting in Warsaw — the first EU-U.S. summit since March 2014 — comes at a delicate time in transatlantic relations, as Brussels and Washington struggle to complete negotiations on a sweeping free-trade deal and also seek to improve coordination on data privacy and on security and counter-terrorism matters.
The EU statement gave no other details about the specific agenda of the meeting.
A White House statement said the leaders would “discuss U.S.-EU cooperation across a range of shared priorities, including countering terrorism, fostering economic growth and prosperity, and addressing the global refugee crisis.”
