Facebook, Instagram Down For Some On Thanksgiving: Here's Where

Intermittent outages struck Facebook and Instagram Thanksgiving morning and continued into the day just as millions of Americans sought to post messages of gratitude and pictures of turkey feasts while also searching for Black Friday deals.

Instagram and Facebook acknowledged the problem as the complaints came flooding in. Close to 5 p.m., a Facebook spokesperson said that the outage had been resolved.

“Earlier today, people may have experienced trouble accessing Facebook’s family of apps. The issue has since been resolved, we are back to 100 percent for everyone and we’re sorry for any inconvenience,” the spokesperson said.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook’s family of apps, including Instagram. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,” Instagram tweeted earlier in the day on Thanksgiving.

Slow news feeds and photos failing to upload were among the problems reported. In addition to irking millions of users and prompting Americans to put down their phones for a few hours this holiday, the outages have the potential to be costly to businesses that use social media to publicize deals on the biggest shopping day of the year.

According to The Verge, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all suffered their worst ever outages earlier this year in March. That outage lasted more than 24 hours and ended up being a problem attributed to a “server configuration change.”

The website DownDetector reported that the outages are affecting users differently across the globe. While the Instagram outages appear to be worst in Central Europe, the Facebook outages are affecting more users in the United States. DownDetector began reporting the spike in Instagram outages at about 5 a.m. Thursday morning.
