Former NYPD detective and TV newsman Mike Sheehan loses battle to cancer at 71

Longtime detective-turned-news reporter Mike Sheehan — known for his hand in investigating the “Preppy Killer” and “Central Park Five” cases — died Friday following a battle with cancer, the Post has learned.

Sheehan succumbed to his illness around 8 p.m. Friday at NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, according to Detective Investigators’ Association president Jack Freck, his friend and former partner. He was 71.

“We were partners for years,” Freck told the Post. “He was a great guy and a great detective.”

Sheehan was one of the lead detectives who worked the 1989 Central Park jogger case. He also had a hand in solving the Robert Chambers “preppy killer” case of August 1986, Freck said.

He left the force after 25 years on the job and joined Fox 5 as a reporter.
