The never-ending silent calls coming from a hospital that cares for Hawaiian monk seals turned out to be the work of a tiny gecko.
Dr. Claire Simeone, the hospital director at Ke Kai Ola on Hawaii’s Big Island, chronicled how she solved the mystery of the butt-dials when she herself received numerous calls in a short amount of time. In a Twitter thread that has received thousands of retweets, Simeone said she was getting lunch last Thursday when the calls started.
When she picked up, the line was silent. Simeone said she began to panic a bit and drove back to the hospital after getting nine calls in 15 minutes.
When Simeone got back to the hospital, she found that there was no emergency and everything was calm, she wrote. Then she received another call from inside the hospital and decided to contact Hawaiian Telecom. The operator suggested to her that a phone might be on the fritz and she says that several people called the hospital to ask why they were receiving so many calls.
The Hawaiian Telecom operator confirmed to Simeone that a “bazillion” calls were coming from one line and asked her to try and find the phone with the possible issue. After looking around the hospital, Simeone found the culprit in the laboratory.
‘THERE IS A GECKO SITTING ON THE TOUCHSCREEN OF THE PHONE, MAKING CALLS WITH HIS TINY GECKO FEET!!!” Simeone tweeted, along with a photo of the creature sprawled on the phone.

Besides calling her 15 times, Simeone said the gecko had managed to call everyone on the hospital’s recent call list.
In the Twitter thread, Simeone said she sent a note to the hospital staff and volunteers explaining what had happened. She also joked that she “immediately hired gecko.”
