Governors Ball Sunday lineup gets washed out by rain
Fans of SZA and The Strokes were left in the lurch Sunday when music festival Governors Ball was cancelled due to “severe weather.”
The announcement that the show would not go on came after organizers had already called off daytime acts and delayed the Randall’s Island Park festival for hours over “forecasted thunderstorms.”
Scores of attendees had waited for hours in the sun before being let in to the venue at 6:30 p.m.
At around 8:30 p.m. screens on at least one of the festival’s five stages flashed signs telling concertgoers to head to the nearest exit because of impending weather.
Severe thunderstorms were expected to batter the area until about 11 p.m.
Video posted on Twitter shows crowds getting soaked as they walk across the RFK bridge to leave the island. Other clips show hordes of people packing under an overpass to take cover from the downpour.
Indie rock band The Strokes was set to perform from 10:15 to 11:30 p.m., while R&B singer SZA was scheduled for 10:15 to 11:15 p.m.
Attendees were fuming.
“I came all the way from Chicago to see @thestrokes I want my f—ing money back,” tweeted @angelrobledo91.
“This festival is a full f–in mess today,” added @mandy_1111.
The evacuation sparked comparisons to Fyre Festival, the failed 2017 luxury music event that sparked at least eight lawsuits and sent organizer Billy McFarland to jail for fraud.
Governors Ball said in a tweet that it would post “refund info for tonight’s show.”
It was unclear whether organizers would issue a refund, and Governors Ball did not respond to a request for comment.
