Jaden Smith Carries His Own Shaved-Off Locs as a Clutch to the Met Gala

Jaden Smith has never been one for adhering to red carpet tradition. The actor regularly breaks all the rules, wearing and doing whatever he wants to, including wearing a dress if the mood strikes him — a penchant which helped land him the role of the first man to star in Louis Vuitton’s womenswear ads wearing a skirt.

And Monday night’s Met Gala was no exception in terms of upending expected red carpet protocol. Though the Cool Teen™ kept his look super understated, we should have known he would arrive on the Met Gala red carpet making a major statement … this time in the form of carrying his own hair as a clutch.

For his outfit, Smith kept the look super simple, wearing a black overcoat, black T-shirt, black pants and black high-heeled boots with a smattering of silver chains around his neck. In other words, it was the perfect backdrop to really showcase his hair-turned-handbag. But Smith didn’t just rely on his own hair to pull together his ensemble; he tripled down on the unusual accessories, adding a metal grill full of gold diamonds and a pair of wireless speakers blasting music.

Jaden originally cut his hair back at the beginning of April, giving his father Will the honors of snipping off his blond, shoulder-length strands before buzzing it all of for a new role in the film Life in a Year (in which he stars in alongside another recently buzz cut star, Cara Delevingne). That means not only did he carry his own locks as a handbag, but he also had to have the foresight to save them all month to use for this precise occasion. That’s some serious dedication to a Met Gala moment.
