Jordan Thompson fights back to win in Houston

Australian Jordan Thompson has won through to the quarter-final of this week's ATP Tour event in Houston, coming from behind to win 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 against Colombian second-round foe Santiago Giraldo.

The 24-year-old Thompson struggled in the first set on clay, going down 6-4, but rallied to send the second set to a tiebreak and romp home.

He then found himself 5-4 down in the third as Giraldo served for the match, but broke twice in a row to claim victory in just under three hours.

The world No.67 will face Giraldo's compatriot Daniel Elahi Galan in the quarters, before a potential semi-final against Casper Ruud or Marcel Granollers.

Earlier, world No.241 Galan brought two-time defending champion Steve Johnson's nine-match winning streak at the US Men's Clay Court Championship to an end with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.

Former top-10 player Janko Tipsarevic reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final in more than two years by beating third-seeded Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4.

Tipsarevic next will face eighth-seeded American Sam Querrey, who eliminated Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 6-3.

Thompson's compatriot Bernard Tomic was eliminated at the second-round stage on Thursday, going down in straight sets to Granollers.
