Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday praised German police for their efforts during the G20 summit in Hamburg, which was marred by violent protests.

“Every police officer risked their neck. That deserves compliments, not criticism,” the European Commission president said in a statement. “Likewise, the citizens of Hamburg, that helped with the cleaning-up on Sunday, deserve respect and praise,” the statement added. “Hamburg at its best!”

Juncker ended the statement thanking German Chancellor Angela Merkel for acting with “prudence and determination” during the G20.
