Lyon staff & players frustrated with Rayan Cherki Panenka effort

Le Progrès report that Lyon’s staff and players alike were incredibly frustrated with French youth international attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki, who decided to attempt a Panenka penalty after the club lost 3-0 to Arsenal in their mid-season friendly match as part of the Dubai Super Cup.

Cherki, 19, has struggled for regular playing time after bursting onto the scene over 2 years ago under Rudi Garcia and this Panenka effort, struck without any conviction whatsoever, will not have endeared him to new boss Laurent Blanc.

Cherki was the butt of all jokes on social media, and several team-mates and members of staff were visibly furious internally following Cherki’s effort. It is believed that he was going to be given a dressing down in the team meeting on Friday morning.

Lyon currently sit 8th in the Ligue 1 table, 10 points off of the Champions’ League places, very much underperforming expectations, which resulted in the sacking of manager Peter Bosz in October.
