Moulton brothers with Casey’s pair from 2005-06) while Emily Kroshus
turned in the best women’s time in 13 years as the BAA claimed both
individual wins and good weather graced Labor Day’s classic Around Cape
Ann 25K.
Kroshus, a 2004 Princeton grad from Calgary who’s
pursuing a doctorate in Public Health at Harvard, ran away from the deepest
women’s field in recent memory to win by nearly two minutes in
1:38:09. Runner-up Marybeth Baxter (1:40:01) would have been fast enough
to win for most of the last decade as defending champion Tara Wommack (1:42:07)
was third. The local showing was strong as a pair of Gloucester runners
placed in the top 10, Magnolia 5K winner Layce Alves (7th, 1:45:55) and Katie
Taormina (9th, 1:48:24).
Kroshus was presented the Gillian Horovitz Trophy by Gillian
herself, especially fitting in that Horovitz was the last woman to run a faster
time here way back in 1998 when she set the present Masters course record
(1:35:42) at age 43.
Moulton (1:24:57) established a big lead early and coasted, maintaining
a safe-enough margin as CMS’s Pat Rich (1:25:43) and Winner’s
Circle’s Mark Hudson (1:25:53) closed late. If either Moulton wins
again they’ll match Larry Olsen for most men’s victories (3).
Last year Larry raced here for the first time in years and dominated the 60-69
division in one of his last races; he was aptly supplanted in that position
this year by another New England icon, Rick Bayko (1:50:29).
USATF clubs are the heartbeat of this race, and team
participation again was strong. GBTC emerged as men’s and
women’s open champs while Winner’s Circle claimed both
masters’ titles.
