Rachel Maddow, Lester Holt among moderators for first Democratic primary debate

NBC News announced on Tuesday that “Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt and MSNBC host Rachel Maddow will be among the moderators for the first Democratic primary debate later this month.

Joining them will be “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd and “Noticias Telemundo” anchor Jose Diaz-Balart.

The debates will take place over two days — June 26 and June 27 — in Miami.

They will air from 9 to 11 each night on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo.

The sprawling field of Democratic hopefuls will be split into 10 each over the two nights.

Holt will moderate the first hour, with Guthrie and Diaz-Balart joining him, and he will appear in the second hour when Todd and Maddow are the moderators.

The format will be the same both nights.

Holt will moderate the debate both hours, with Guthrie and Diaz-Balart joining him in the first hour and Todd and Maddow alongside him during the second hour.

Twenty of the 23 candidates will appear in Miami after making the cut by drawing at least 1 percent support in three national polls.

Debates will also take place July 30-31 in Detroit and Sept. 12-13 in a yet-undetermined city.

In all, the Democratic National Committee will hold 11 debates.
