It looks like a big AEW television announcement will indeed be taking place this coming week.
As noted, Tony Maglio (@TonyMaglio) published a story on TheWrap.com this past Thursday, breaking the news that All Elite Wrestling is expected to announce a television deal with the Turner Network at the WarnerMedia Upfronts in New York City this coming Wednesday, May 15th, at 10am EST.
If AEW’s deal is in fact with the Turner Network, the belief is their television deal would be with TNT.
Dave Meltzer (@DaveMeltzerWON) followed up with more details on the story on Sunday morning’s new episode of Wrestling Observer Radio at F4WOnline.com.
According to the longtime editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the story on The Wrap is accurate and a deal will likely be announced on Wednesday.
If the deal is true it is believed that a push from Bleacher Report, the streaming service associated with the Turner Network since being bought out by them in 2012, will be in store for AEW.
In terms of their upcoming Double Or Nothing pay-per-view on May 25th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Meltzer noted that Dish Network is now advertising the show and will be offering it via PPV on 5/25. With Dish on board, AEW’s 5/25 show now has PPV clearance with Dish Network, In Demand and DirecTV, making their event available to fans in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.
This could be the reason why FITE.tv will be carrying AEW’s PPVs everywhere except in the U.K., where ITV has the rights, or in the U.S., where a network to be determined (Turner Network) will have the rights.
In another update, longtime pro wrestling and mixed martial arts writer “Front Row Brian” (@FightOracle) noted that the weekly AEW television deal is expected to premiere the same week that WWE SmackDown Live will be moving from the USA Network to FOX.
WWE SmackDown Live, which will be moving from Tuesday nights to Friday nights when the move from USA Network to FOX is made, is scheduled to premiere on FOX on Friday, October 4th. If the report from “Front Row Brian” is true, AEW’s television show, which is expected to air every week on Tuesday nights, will be debuting on TNT on Tuesday, October 1st.
We will keep you posted as more information regarding AEW’s TV deal surfaces.
