The man had been trapped for two days before he was heard screaming for help. But it was no simple matter to free him. The pipe was only 36 inches wide, and he was originally heard screaming for help from a manhole that was about a block away from the spot where crews ultimately found him.

Rescuers worked for more than two hours to free him from the sewer pipe in the 24900 block of South Baypoint Avenue. An Urban Search and Rescue team went in after him, and it took almost the entire length of their 300-foot length of air hose, and another team was called in to help reach the trapped man, according to Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

The man became trapped shortly afternoon, and he was ultimately freed by 2:30 p.m.
