Teen Searched 'Kids Kill Parents' Movies Before Murders: Police

KANSAS CITY, MO — Prosecutors in Kansas City say a teenage girl who changed her story multiple times after her parents were murdered last spring searched for “scary movies where kids kill parents,” according to court documents charging Daejona M. Holmes, 15, with multiple felonies.

Investigators also found rap lyrics that spoke of wanting a dead father and a stick-figure drawing that showed her shooting her father, according to court documents. Authorities say another drawing showed a stick figure labeled as “dad” laying in a pool of blood.

Holmes was charged Monday with two counts each of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and tampering with physical evidence.

Her parents, Kinderly Holmes, 37, and Brian Starr, 38, were found dead in their home on April 9. Holmes called Kansas City police to report her parents were shot during a robbery, according to court documents, but under questioning later said she heard a gunshot, found her mother dead in an upstairs bedroom and picked up the gun and shot her dad.

Investigators said a different story emerged in a review of Holmes’ internet searches, television station WDAF reported. In addition to the searches for movies about kids killing their parents, police said they uncovered a video on Holmes’ cellphone showing her brandishing a gun as she danced to lyrics of the rap song about killing parents.

About a month after her initial confession that she had shot her father, Holmes admitted to police that she had moved her father’s body closer to the front door, then returned twice to get her and her mother’s cellphones, and a key to the house, according to documents.

Investigators also said Holmes couldn’t explain why she had waited an hour to call 911 — something she was encouraged to do by a friend she asked for help and met at McDonald’s, according to a Kansas City Star report.
