The first heart-wrenching trailer for the film adaption of Donna Tartt’s 760-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Goldfinch” was released Wednesday.

“In Amsterdam, I dreamt I saw my mother again,” star Ansel Elgort narrates at the launch of the melancholy preview. The “Fault in Our Stars” star plays the adult Theo Decker, who loses his mother in a terrorist bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The clip features a mix of dramatic moments — featuring Decker as a boy (played by 14-year-old Oakes Fegley) and as a man, all set to emotional music.

In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, young Decker takes a Dutch painting that his mother loved. A socialite (Nicole Kidman) becomes his adopted mother and an antique shop owner (Jeffrey Wright) helps Decker deal with the trauma.

“We move around a lot more impressionistically to suggest that the man that you meet at the start of the story is not in a very good place,” director John Crowley tells USA Today. “It’s a very interesting study in how an individual’s relationship to his own past and his sense of his past can shift.”

It’s the second time Elgort made headlines Wednesday, the first being for inexplicably posting 17 shirtless selfies to his Instagram.

The film is set to release on September 13.
