Trump announces escalating tariffs on Mexico over migrant surge

President Trump said on Thursday that his administration will impose tariffs on Mexico until the country somehow stops the flow of migrants coming across the US-Mexico border.

Trump said on Twitter that the tariffs will go into effect in a matter of days and the levies could get more severe over time if the immigration crisis continues.

“On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, …at which time the Tariffs will be removed.”

The White House released a statement that said Mexico “must step up and help solve” the problem of illegal immigration.

Trump had teased the “big league” announcement earlier on Thursday while speaking to reporters outside the White House.

“We are going to do something very dramatic on the border because people are coming into our country,” Trump said.

It Trump isn’t satisfied, the 5 percent tariff will increase to 10 percent on July 1, to 15 percent on Aug. 1, to 20 percent on Sept. 1 and to 25 percent on Oct. 1, the White House said.

After Trump’s announcement, Mexican President Andres Lopez Obrador later sent an open letter to the American President Thursday that said: “I express to you that I don’t want confrontation… I propose deepening our dialogue, to look for other alternatives to the migration problem.”
