The European Commission today added two Ghanaian-based airlines to the blacklist of airlines whose operations in the EU are restricted.

The two airlines, Meridian Airways and Airlift International, provided cargo services out of a number of EU countries, including the UK, Belgium, France and Germany.

Meridian Airways was banned from operating in the EU because “of a series of very poor results” from safety inspections of its fleet and the facilities it used in EU countries.

Airlift International will be allowed to operate only one of its fleet of five planes within the EU. The others failed to meet international safety standards, the Commission said.

The restrictions will be reviewed at the next meeting of the EU’s air-safety committee in November.

A total of 278 airlines from 17 countries are currently on the blacklist. Most are operators registered in Africa and Asia.
