Overtime Wins Lift No. 10 Virginia Past No. 23 North Dakota State 20-15
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– A pair of overtime wins lifted No. 10-ranked University of Virginia to a 20-15 dual match wrestling win over visiting No. 23 North Dakota State University on Saturday, Nov. 15.
The Bison (0-1) are scheduled to wrestle No. 12 Virginia Tech (1-0) and Gardner-Webb (2-0) on Sunday, Nov. 16, in Blacksburg. Gardner-Webb takes on Virginia in the second dual on Saturday.
North Dakota State went up 9-7 after four weight classes when Clay Ream, a 5-foot-9 redshirt freshman from Wentzville, Mo., recorded a pin at 4:18 over Virginia’s TJ Miller at 149 pounds. Ream improved to 8-4 and registered his second pin on the season.
NDSU sophomore Josh Rodriguez (Gudalupe, Calif.) wrestled for the first time this season and defeated Virginia’s Will Mason 3-1 at 125 pounds. Rodriguez (1-0) came into the match ranked No. 13 nationally.
However, Virginia (4-0) posted overtime wins at 157 and 174 pounds. Steven Keogh dropped a 7-5 sudden victory-1 decision to the Cavaliers’ Andrew Atkinson at 174, while Virginia’s No. 11-ranked Blaise Butler edged NDSU’s No. 14 Kurtis Julson 3-1 in overtime. Keogh is now 4-3, while Julson suffered his first loss in five outings.
North Dakota State 184-pound junior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn.) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third period to post a 7-1 decision over Virginia’s Billy Coggins. Zillmer, ranked No. 13 nationally, improved to 9-1 this season.
NDSU senior Evan Knutson (Wausau, Wis.) closed out the dual with a 9-2 decision over Virginia’s Collin Campbell at 285 pounds. Knutson improves to 5-0.
