The June 20th edition of WWE SmackDown airs live on the USA Network from the Wright State University Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio, featuring the fallout show from the Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) that went down this past Sunday night in St. Louis.
Advertised for tonight: General Manager Daniel Bryan is back to deal with the James Ellsworth controversy, and more!
The show opens with a quick recap of the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match before cutting backstage, where Charlotte, Natalya, Becky and Tamina are waiting to speak to Daniel Bryan. Daniel Bryan walks out of his office and they all ask him what he’s going to do about James Ellsworth’s interference in the Money In The Bank match on Sunday. Bryan says he’s going to wait to see what Carmella and Ellsworth have to say first and he leaves.

We are welcomed to the show by Tom Philipps then the announcer introduces Carmella and Ellsworth. They make their way out to the ring. Ellsworth tells the fans to show some respect to Miss Money In The Bank, and Carmella says she doesn’t care what people are saying about the finish of Sunday’s match.
Carmella welcomes us to the fabulous Era of Carmella and asks James to hold the briefcase for her. She says she wants to address the elephant in the room. For the last 48 hours the name Carmella has been trending worldwide, but not because she won the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match, but because of how she won.
Everyone are saying that she disrespected a historic moment or made a mockery of the women’s division or that she needed James Ellsworth to help her climb the ladder and win the match for her, but she does not care. She’s been overlooked and underestimated ever since she was the last pick in the WWE draft and the people believe that she’s not there for girl power.
Everybody talks about Natalya’s pedigree, Tamina’s strength, Becky Lynch’s straight fire, and how athletic Charlotte is, but none of that matters because she’s just that intelligent. While everybody else was worried about making history, she was making plans for her future, and the fact of the matter is she won fair and square.

She was telling the WWE Universe to remember that back in 2014 when Kane came down and helped Seth Rollins win or in 2015 when Bray Wyatt, who wasn’t even in the damn match, stopped Roman Reigns from winning and Sheamus won. The decisions stayed the same. But all the internet trolls have to get on Twitter and get Daniel Bryan to come out later that evening to address her win. Carmella says they’re all pathetic and that’s embarrassing.
She then says how can you break a rule when there are none? The crowd chants for Daniel Bryan and Carmella says that he will be out tonight but Bryan is gonna have to make the right decision, and she thinks it’ll be him “manning up” and reinforcing what she’s just said.
She said that she is Ms. Money in the Bank and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do about it.

We go backstage where Daniel Bryan is shown watching Carmella on a monitor. Charlotte walks in and Daniel mentions her neck injury. Daniel agrees with Carmella’s point that it was a no disqualification match, and Charlotte says that should only apply to the people licensed to be in the match. Charlotte tells Bryan to do the right thing and then she leaves.
Commentary hypes up Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler and Luke Harper vs. Jinder Mahal for later tonight, and we see New Day backstage hanging out with a skeleton wearing Usos merch. Big E vs. Jimmy Uso is after the break.
Back from commercial, New Day makes their entrance.
The New Day starts by saying they wanted to come out with that blue and silver around their waist but the Usos staged a prison break and left. So they are cordially inviting the Usos to step into the New Day’s playpen then Kofi introduces the Warden. Kofi says that he is big, he is handsome, he’s got a big nightstick and he is not afraid to use it, he is Deput-E.
Big E says that in their jurisdiction there is no easy way out, there is no shortcuts home, because New Day rocks.
The Usos make their entrance and the match will begin during the break.
Big E def. Jimmy Uso: Jey Uso is at ringside and he distracts Big E early on in the match, allowing Jimmy to hit a superkick on Big E. Jimmy comes flying off the top rope but Big E catches him and hits a belly to belly suplex. Big E follows up with two more belly to belly suplexes, but Jimmy comes back with a Samoan Drop. Jimmy then hits a cheap shot on Kofi at ringside, which gets Xavier and Jey involved too. This leads to Uso rocking Big E at ringside, then taking him back in the ring. Jimmy goes for a superkick but misses and Big E capitalizes with a Big Ending for the win.
Daniel Bryan is backstage on the phone with Shane McMahon when he’s interrupted by Natalya and Tamina. Natalya is overly nice to and wishes him a happy belated Father’s Day, congratulating him on his newborn daughter and comparing her to one of her cats who hasn’t been sleeping well.
Tamina gets right to the point and says if Carmella runs her mouth one more time she’s gonna put her boot in it. Bryan promises an official decision soon and Nattie falls over herself thanking him. Daniel Bryan tell Shane McMahon that he will call him back as we go to break.
Back from commercial, we see a bit of hype for John Cena’s return on July 4.
Naomi is backstage for an interview and is asked about the controversy. She says it is unfortunate. With James Ellsworth being the deciding factor? Hell no. But she’s sure Daniel Bryan will make the right decision and she doesn’t care who it is, because she’s gonna be ready.
She then gets interrupted by Lana. She says Naomi should be thanking Carmella because if it wasn’t for her and her man, Smackdown’s Women’s Champion would be ravishing. She wants a rematch and Naomi calls her thirsty and says she lost and felt the glow. But because she’s a fighting champion, she’ll give her another chance next week, and she best get out of her face before she gets slapped back to Russia.
Commentary shows us a recap of Jinder Mahal’s successful title defense against Randy Orton before showing us a sit-down interview with Orton from earlier today.
We see a pre-taped sit-down interview with Randy Orton where he explains that he lost control on Sunday at Money In The Bank. Orton says Jinder made it personal, and now their beef is far from over and there’s no turning back. Orton says Jinder made a mistake, and maybe he’ll break the necks of the Singh Brothers then travel to India to RKO Jinder’s relatives.
Dolph Ziggler makes his entrance, his match against Shinsuke Nakamura is after the break.
Shinsuke Nakamura def. Dolph Ziggler: Nakamura and Ziggler grapple on the mat until Ziggler rolls out to recover for a moment. Nakamura ducks a clothesline and hits a knee to the midsection and a kick to the head. Nakamura slams Ziggler down then hits a knee drop. Nakamura dodges a dropkick, but Ziggler is able to throw Nakamura between the turnbuckles into the ring post. Ziggler successfully hits a dropkick this time for a two count. Ziggler works on Nakamura on the mat until Nakamura dumps Ziggler to the outside. Back in the ring, Nakamura hits some elbows to the face until Ziggler grabs him by the hair and throws him down. Nakamura comes back with more elbows and kicks. Nakamura follows up with a running knee in the corner for a two count. Nakamura gears up for a knee to the face, but Ziggler dodges it and hits a leg kick then a Fame-asser for a two count. Ziggler misses a superkick and Nakamura goes for a triangle choke. Ziggler squirms around and Nakamura settles for an armbar. Ziggler fights out by raking Nakamura’s eyes. Ziggler hits the Zig Zag for another two count. As soon as Nakamura kicks out, Ziggler puts him in a sleeper. Nakamura fights out and head-butts Ziggler. Nakamura takes Ziggler down then knees him in the back of the neck. Nakamura waits for Ziggler to get to his feet then hits him with a Kinshasa Knee Strike for the win via pinfall.
We go backstage where Daniel Bryan is telling Sami Zayn how awesome he was in Money in the Bank and telling him he’s got a match against Baron Corbin next week. Sami Zayn is stoked for the match as he says he has Corbin’s number and he will be able to get his revenge on him. Becky walks up and Zayn tells her he saw what happened on Sunday and he’s pulling for her. Becky complains to Bryan that she’s disgruntled after Sunday’s match. 
She tells Bryan that she physically had the briefcase in her hand and that snake Ellsworth slithered in and knocked her down and handed the briefcase to Carmella. SmackDown is the land of opportunity but it feels like the land of handouts lately because it doesn’t matter how hard she trains, how good she is, because somebody’s always able to weasel in and take a shortcut. Becky also tells Bryan to do the right thing then walks off.
U.S. Champion Kevin Owens is backstage getting ready to come out to the ring for his open challenge coming up after the break.
Back from commercial, Kevin Owens makes his entrance to the ring.
Kevin Owens gets on the mic and says the only reason he’s standing in this ring without the Money in the Bank contract is because on Sunday night the other five competitors in the ladder match conspired against him, ganging up on him because they knew he was the most dangerous man in that match. They tried to end his career and that is an absolute injustice.
What happened to him on Sunday wasn’t fair but he’s in this ring tonight unbroken, still the new Face of America and still your United States Champion. Shane McMahon loves to say that SmackDown is the land of opportunity, but the original land of opportunity was the United States of America, and that’s why he takes it as duty to truly make SmackDown the land of opportunity.
Owens says he’s going to give one lucky individual from Dayton, Ohio a chance at his U.S. title. Owens announces that the “Kevin Owens Face Of America open challenge” starts now. AJ Styles comes out and says it’s go time. Owens says AJ is a typical rude American, and that this challenge is only for a Dayton, OH resident. American Alpha’s music hits and Chad Gable comes out. Gable says he moved to Dayton this morning. Owens asks for his address and Gable gives him one. AJ backs up Gable’s story, and the ref calls for the bell.
Kevin Owens (c) def. Chad Gable: Styles is on commentary for this one. Gable grabs an off-guard Kevin Owens and hits a series of suplexes that forces Owens to roll to the outside to recover. Back in the ring Gable hits a moonsault off the top for a two count. Owens whips Gable into the corner and goes for a cannonball splash, but Gable rolls out of the way and Owens crashes into the corner. Gable hits a bridging German suplex but only gets a two count. Owens comes back with a Pop Up Powerbomb for the win and he immediately heads up the ramp with his U.S. title belt.
We go backstage where Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley are watching Zack Ryder’s injury in the #1 contender’s match they won months ago with Daniel Bryan. They make a case that there’s no statute of limitations and they deserve it because they earned it, then they ask Daniel Bryan for an opportunity for a Tag-Team Title Match. Bryan books them in a match against The Usos next week to earn a Tag Title shot as we go to a break.
Back from commercial, Sami Zayn is backstage with a clipboard and two Sonic milkshakes on a table. Tye Dillinger walks in and Sami asks him to rate the milkshakes. Tye rates them both ten, and tells Sami to drink both milkshakes instead of having to pick one. Sami asks Tye if there’s anything he wouldn’t rate a ten, and Tye says “this conversation” and leaves.
Daniel Bryan makes his entrance. He thanks the crowd and says it’s great to be back, but he wishes it were under different circumstances. He’s been holed up with Shane McMahon and other officials for the last two days trying to sort the Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match out, and he was told to keep his emotions out of it and stick to the rulebook.
He introduces the competitors from the match before continuing. His decision involves all of them, and Carmella had valid points. Daniel Bryan talks about James Ellsworth’s interference in the Money In The Bank ladder match Last Sunday. Bryan says that the rules says the first woman to hold the briefcase wins, and he points out that there has been interference in these kind of matches before. 
Bryan says though that there has never been someone who interferes to climb the ladder, grab the case and hand it to someone else. Ellsworth interrupts and says that Bryan becoming a dad to a “little vegan hippy baby” made him go soft, and tells him to get this over with. Bryan tells him to shut up or he’ll punch him in the face and fire him.  
Carmella insists he can’t talk to them like that and Becky goes to tell her how wrong she is when Nattie says she’s as pathetic as Jimmy is.
Charlotte cuts Natalya off and says she’s here for a decision and if she doesn’t shut up she’ll make her look like Ellsworth. Tamina tells her she needs to be quiet or she will also look like Ellsworth. Bryan continues, saying it was a historic match and Carmella has an opportunity to do a first-time ever thing, too, because she’ll be the first woman ever to hand over the briefcase.
Bryan isn’t going to let somebody like Ellsworth interrupt one of the most important moment in WWE women’s history and next week we’re gonna have another Money in the Bank ladder match.
Bryan takes the briefcase and heads to the back with it. All of the women start brawling in the ring. Becky hits a T-bone suplex on Tamina, then Becky and Charlotte surround Carmella. Charlotte hits the Natural Selection on Carmella then Becky puts Carmella in the Dis-arm-her. Carmella writhes in pain as the baby-faces celebrate and we go to break.
Back from commercial we get some hype for Talking Smack as Daniel Bryan returns to do the show, as well as The New Day, James Ellsworth and Carmella and AJ Styles.
The Singh Brothers introduces The WWE Champion Jinder Mahal to the ring as his match with Luke Harper is up next.
Jinder Mahal def. Luke Harper: This one is a non-title match. Jinder starts off in control but Harper decks him with a dropkick and Jinder rolls outside to recover. Harper hits a suicide dive onto one of the Singh Brothers at ringside, then Jinder hits a running knee to Harper’s face. Jinder throws Luke back in the ring for a two count. Jinder hits a head-butt and some elbows to the face, but Luke blocks one and hits a butterfly suplex. Harper follows up with a senton bomb and a big boot for a two count. 
Jinder hits an elbow to the face but Luke comes right back with a side suplex for another two count. Harper goes up top but Jinder stops him with a punch and a head-butt. Jinder grabs him and superplexes him off the top, and both men are down. Baron Corbin’s music hits and Corbin comes out with his Money In The Bank briefcase. After the distraction Luke Harper sets up Jinder Mahal for the superkick, but the Singh Brothers interferes. Jinder hits him with the Kalas and pins him for the win.
After the match, Jinder celebrates with the Singh Brothers when Randy Orton’s music hits and he makes his entrance. He fights the Singh Brothers off then gets in the ring. Orton goes after Mahal then they end up out of the ring near the timekeeper’s area. Orton lifts Mahal and slams his back onto the barricade.
Orton then hits the DDT off the barricade. Orton goes back in the ring as he is attacked by the Singh Brothers. He fights them off, RKOs one of them, as Mahal is making his escape, then the other dives into another RKO. Randy Orton stares down Jinder Mahal as we go off the air.
