205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick has officially announced that the Cruiserweight Championship will be defended at WWE SummerSlam, as Cedric Alexander faces off against his latest challenger, Drew Gulak.
This is big news for the cruiserweight division, as the Cruiserweight title has not been defended at a major event since The Greatest Royal Rumble this April. Ever since WWE returned to co-branded monthly special events at Backlash (and really, it started with WrestleMania 34) the cards have been so stacked with Raw and Smackdown Live talent there just hasn’t been enough room for the championship, giving the appearance that it is not a top priority for the company, despite the weekly 205 Live shows featuring some of the best matches of the year on a consistent basis.
