PSG sweating slightly over Kylian Mbappé deal

With the deadline fast upon us, PSG representatives were sweating a little as recently as yesterday over the fact that they had still not reached a total agreement with AS Monaco for the signing of Kylian Mbappé.

According to L’Équipe, the specific difficulty that PSG are facing is to structure the wording of the deal in a way that makes it an obligatory buy clause without making it read so black and white. Because if it is written obviously as if the buy clause is obligatory, then the €180m that PSG are due to pay AS Monaco for Mbappé would count towards this season, on top of the €222m they have spent on Neymar, which makes them uncomfortable vis-à-vis Financial Fair Play.

On the other hand, you have AS Monaco who refuse to accept any deal that is not water-tight in terms of PSG having to pay €180m + no matter what. They do not want to be in a situation next summer where Les Parisiens have to get out of the deal and all of a sudden Monaco are left with a player with one year left on his contract and with no apparent intention to sign an extension. They would lose enormous value that way.

Despite this rather considerable problem, Kylian Mbappé’s entourage remain supremely confident that a deal will go through.

Canal + reported last night that the deal is due to be announced after France’s World Cup Qualifying match this evening vs the Netherlands.
